Pro Bono Lawyer Recruitment

The goal of the SC Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts is to match artists and arts organizations in need of assistance with arts related issues with qualified attorneys in a timely manner. The majority of the legal issues posed the arts organizations will be handled by law students enrolled in the Non Profit Law Clinic at the USC School of Law.

Individual artists with arts related legal issues will be directed to the SC Bar Pro Bono Program and to the volunteer attorneys who have indicated a willingness to participate in the SC Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts program. We anticipate that many of the arts related issues will be brief, advice and counsel requests.

Law student volunteers with the Pro Bono Program at the USC School of Law will handle the incoming requests, screen them for appropriateness and direct them to the correct service provider and be available to all pro bono attorneys for follow up research and clerking services. They have created a vast database of research material and indicated a strong interest in this area of the law. They await the opportunity to assist you as you provide valuable guidance to SC's artists and to gain first hand experience in an often overlooked area of the law.

In addition to regular pro bono assistance the SCVLA is working to assist arts organizations in need of board members. Upon request the SCVLA will facilitate matching volunteer attorneys with arts organizations in need of new board members. The arts organizations must have a board job description and understand that they are seeking the attorney as a board member not as an attorney for the board. Attorneys interested in receiving information about arts organizations seeking new board members should indicate such on the attached Pro Bono Lawyer Recruitment Form. There are not guarantees about matches; the final decision will be between the volunteer attorney and the arts organization.

To insure this system works efficiently we need a steady and dedicated pool of volunteer attorneys willing to answer questions and provide assistance on arts related issues.
